Thanasis & Alkmini

This work by Andrea Sposari takes shape from a love story that blossomed during an Erasmus+ experience. Created with acrylic paint, spray paint, and brushstrokes, it portrays Thanasis and Alkmini, two people from the same country whose paths crossed far from home.
Thanasis arrived in Sicily in 2012 thanks to the Erasmus+ program. What was intended to be a temporary stay quickly transformed into a place of belonging: here he grew professionally and, in the following years, worked as a project coordinator in the organization that hosted him as an intern. It was precisely in this context of exchange and mobility that he met Alkmini, who also arrived in Sicily through an Erasmus+ exchange.
For a time, Sicily became their shared home: a space of transition that transformed into a new beginning. Their lives continued together between England and Italy, and their family grew beyond national borders. With this work, they symbolically return to Sicily, the place where it all began.
The line connecting their faces—symbolically a pair of shared headphones—recalls a bond built on listening and connection. Europe appears not as an abstract idea, but as a concrete space where encounters take shape and movement can take root.

ChatGPT was used in creating the reference image for the artwork - using a selfie taken by Thanasis and Alkmini, they were then “artificially” posed for the artist to paint from.

This artwork is now on permanent display at Unico Hotel, Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, Sicily - a hub for international travellers and erasmus+ participants in the city.
